Haringey Police take on Three Peaks Challenge for mental health

Members of a police emergency response team in Haringey are undertaking a fund raising event in September to raise funds for charities focused on mental health.

The 30-strong members of Emergency Response Team B will take on the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge over a 24 hour period at the end of September. The officers, who will all be walking in their own time, will climb the three highest peaks of England, Scotland and Wales beginning with Snowdon in Wales, moving onto Scafell Pike in England before finishing on Ben Nevis in Scotland.

Two charities will benefit from their efforts including mental health charity Mind in Haringey which supports anyone suffering from mental health problems in the borough.

Explaining why the team selected Mind in Haringey, Head of Emergency Response Team B, Inspector Victoria Kneale said “a significant proportion of the calls that we deal with on the front line in Haringey are related in part to mental health issues so supporting a great local charity like Mind in Haringey was a natural choice for us”.

Lynette Charles CEO of Mind in Haringey added “Mind in Haringey is delighted to have been chosen by Response Team B as one of their chosen charities for the Three Peaks Challenge.  Around one in four of us will face a mental health problem every year, which makes challenges like this so important, by ensuring we continue to raise awareness of our services to the community in Haringey”.

The second organisation to benefit is the Police Dependants’ Trust which emotionally and financially supports anyone harmed during their policing role.

Inspector Kneale commented that the stress of policing had had a serious effect on several of her colleagues and in walking for the PDT the team also wanted to highlight the toll that frontline policing can have on the mental health of police officers.

The Chief Executive of the Police Dependants’ Trust Gill Scott-Moore said “we have seen a significant increase in the number of serving and former personnel carrying the physical and mental scars of frontline policing, which means that right now we are helping more colleagues in need than ever before. We wish everyone taking part the very best of luck and to everyone sponsoring their efforts, I just want to say thank you.”
