I like the fact that we’re all helping each other… I think if you’re signing up to do peer support… you do need to recognize that it is giving, and receiving, support.

What is Peer Support?

Peer support distinguishes itself from other mental health services as individuals engage in fostering a secure environment for one another. In this setting, individuals can leverage their collective experiences to provide and receive support mutually.

Peers determine which elements of their personal experiences to share, seek emotional support for, and in turn, aid others.

The Peer support we offer:

The Peer Support provided by Mind in Haringey is non-specific and focuses on mild anxiety, social anxiety, and depression, as well as coping with the stresses that life presents to us.

Groups:

Group peer support entails the gathering of three or more individuals to provide mutual emotional assistance. Various approaches can be adopted, ranging from organised groups with designated roles and structured activities, to more relaxed and informal get-togethers.

One to one:

One-on-one peer support can occur face-to-face, via video call, or through telephone assistance. It involves a reciprocal interaction between two individuals during structured sessions, where one participant has undergone specific training, such as mentoring skills. The focus is on discovering methods to manage emotional challenges.

…It’s comforting to know that all those people are going through the same thing, just like a little group community. There’s a comfort of knowing that these people are feeling the same way you are.

How does it work?

The Haringey Wellbeing Network offers two distinct peer support services- Peer Support Group Hubs and 1-2-1 support, both seeking to:

  • Bring together people with shared experiences to support each other
  • Provides safe space where you feel accepted and understood
  • Treat everyone’s experiences as being equally important
  • It involves both giving and receiving support

Peer support involves individuals utilizing their personal experiences to assist one another. Various forms of peer support exist, all with the common objective of uniting individuals who have shared experiences in order to provide mutual support. Additionally, peer support creates an environment where individuals can feel accepted and understood.

Peer Support Group Hubs:
Currently, all the groups are Ongoing with no limits on the session, and all are facilitated by trained Staff.

One to One sessions:

1-to-1 sessions, are between a peer and a trained mentor with life experience and will be conducted for a restricted number of sessions (8 weeks, 8 sessions).

The various areas of Peer Support encompass:

  • Social emphasis
  • Activity emphasis
  • Emphasis on exchanging mental health experiences
  • Educational emphasis

I have a very good relationship with my peers and we share how we feel. We support one another and I look forward to seeing everyone on a weekly basis.
