The Haringey Health Champion programme supports positive health outcomes across Haringey’s diverse communities. Delivered in partnership with Black Thrive Haringey, Mind in Haringey’s Health Champion contributes to a borough-wide programme aimed at reducing health inequalities. Our Health Champion will focus specifically on supporting African and Caribbean communities, addressing deep-rooted health inequalities by decreasing barriers to access, building trust, and providing culturally informed support.
This service is available to all members of the African and Caribbean community, offering signposting, practical support with referrals and appointments, and supportive conversations. To access the service, please email Belinda: Belinda.Opuni@mih.org.uk
A Health Champion is a member of the local community who provides peer-led, community-based support to improve access to health information and services. Our Health Champion will act as a bridge between African and Caribbean communities and Haringey health services, raising awareness of the support and services available. Working closely with community members, the Health Champion will also amplify African and Caribbean voices, facilitating a 2-way dialogue between the community and Haringey health services, by sharing feedback to help improve delivery and engagement.
Our Health Champion will support African and Caribbean communities through community outreach, one-to-one conversations, group sessions, and attendance at community events. They will provide culturally informed signposting to relevant health and wellbeing services.
The Health Champion will also help individuals navigate health and care services by offering tailored, practical support. This may include helping people to complete self-referrals, book appointments, and access digital tools and online services.
The Health Champion will provide support across four key areas of health:
African and Caribbean communities face long-standing health inequalities, including lower uptake of screening and immunisation, barriers to access, and reduced trust in health services.
Through the work of our Health Champion, we aim to improve health outcomes for African and Caribbean people, reduce inequalities, and ensure community insight directly informs local health planning and service design.
I took on this role out of a genuine commitment to improving health outcomes for African and Caribbean communities. Too often, voices go unheard, and support comes too late. I wanted to be part of that work that listens, acts, and creates meaningful change.
